Over the past few decades, lifestyle changes, such as increased junk food consumption and increased reliance on technology, have led to a significant decrease in physical activity. As a result, people began to live a life of no movement. Ultimately, as a result, the number of obese people around the world has increased. According to 2016 statistics, about 40% of the world’s population is overweight. That is, based on their age and height, they weigh more than normal. And 13% were obese. According to the study, by 2030, 60% of the world’s population will be overweight. In this case, obesity will prove to be the most dangerous epidemic of the century. But does it also increase the risk of breast cancer? The answer is yes!

Learn how obesity can make your body hollow

Due to obesity, many other metabolic diseases start in the body, such as diabetes, fatty liver, cardiovascular disease and many other types of cancer diseases, including breast, colon, endometrial cancer. Unhealthy eating habits, alcohol consumption and smoking are often the causes of obesity. All of these further increase the risk of cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women, and according to GLOBOCAN 2020 (Global Data on Cancer Cases), approximately 2.3 million people were declared breast cancer patients in 2019. 700,000 of them died in the same year.

Adipocytes secrete hormones

Obesity is considered a low-grade chronic inflammatory disease in which excess nutrients accumulate in fat cells, and as a result, our immune system suffers. This can lead to many other diseases, including cancer. Estrogen is also secreted by fat cells. Excessive amounts of it also lead to a specific type of breast cancer (hormone receptor-positive cancer), which accounts for about 70 percent of all types of breast cancer.

increased risk of menopause

In several studies, obesity has mysterious and different effects on the development of breast cancer in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Multiple studies have shown that while obesity is one of the leading causes of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, obese premenopausal women have lower rates of breast cancer than non-obese women.

This may be due to the different sources of estrogen in these groups of women, with the ovaries (testes) being the main source of estrogen in premenopausal women. Meanwhile, adipose tissue (fat) is the main source of postmenopausal women.

The most dangerous is the fat in the central part of the body

Some studies also suggest that obesity is a cause of breast cancer. A review of many of these studies, with or without menopause, also confirms that the risk of obesity increases with age, in the middle of the body rather than in the arms or legs. In general, obese women have a 30 percent higher risk of breast cancer than women who are not obese.

Of course, obese premenopausal women have a relatively low risk of breast cancer, but it cannot be used as a preventive measure for younger women, as obesity also contributes to many other diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and more. They also proved very dangerous.

There is an increased risk of spreading breast cancer that grows in the body due to obesity. The treatment of obese breast cancer patients also has many complications, and hormone therapy is less effective, so the risk of cancer recurrence after treatment is higher.

in the end

Taken together, obesity not only increases the risk of breast cancer in most women, it also increases treatment complications, increases the risk of cancer recurrence, and many other diseases can flourish. A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and adequate physical activity can help maintain a normal weight and protect the body from many serious diseases, including breast cancer.
