Most people don’t know how metabolism plays a role in weight loss. So, let’s first understand what is metabolism?
Learn what is metabolism
Metabolism refers to the function of enzymes in the body to digest food, and the functions and conditions vary. Metabolism converts the food we eat into energy for the body. Therefore, if your metabolism is slow, it can directly or indirectly affect your ability to lose weight.
Health Shots spoke with Dr. Aparna Govil Bhaskar, Consultant Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Saifee, Namaha, Apollo Spectra and Cure Specialist Hospitals to find ways to speed up your metabolism.
These 7 Tips Will Help Improve Your Metabolism
1. Do high-intensity exercise
To keep your metabolism and fat burning rate high for hours, you need to do high-intensity exercise. “HIIT, running, swimming, and biking are some of the workouts you can try to improve your metabolism and burn fat,” says Dr. Aparna. It also burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time.
2. Don’t skip meals
Skipping meals or eating very little is not the right way to lose weight. In fact, it can disrupt your metabolism in the long run. According to Dr. Aparna, “Eating regularly helps maintain metabolic balance. Eating 1-2 small meals or snacks between main meals can speed up your metabolism.
According to research, people who snack between main meals tend to eat less during meals. Long intervals between meals slow down your metabolism and increase your body’s ability to store fat.
3. Keep drinking green tea
According to a study from Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands, green tea can boost your energy. It also increases the number of calories and fat you burn each day. Drinking 2-3 cups of green tea a day can encourage your body to burn calories faster.
4. Eat protein-rich foods at every meal
The body uses more energy to break down protein than carbohydrates and fats. This leads to an increase in metabolism. “A high protein intake is good for boosting metabolism and increasing the number of calories burned,” says Dr. Bhaskar. Additionally, protein provides satiety and prevents you from overeating.
5. Get a good night’s sleep
Did you know that sleep may or may not increase metabolism, but lack of sleep can unbalance and spin out of hunger-related hormones? Lack of sleep can lead to midnight snacking and sugar cravings. It causes gradual weight gain by affecting metabolism.
6. Drink enough water
Water helps boost metabolism, detoxify and control appetite. In addition to this, increasing the amount of water you drink will also reduce your body’s hydration levels. If you are dehydrated, your metabolism will slow down. Drink at least 10 to 12 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated.
7. Nutrition
Your daily diet should be full of fat-burning foods that can speed up your metabolic rate. Apples, dairy products (high in protein), fish, eggs, lentils, avocados, red fruits (rich in antioxidants), pineapple, kiwi, lemon, ginger, cinnamon, grapefruit, etc. Make sure you eat healthy and follow an exercise routine.
