Different types of expensive headphones, earphones, headphones etc. are being launched today. They are more innovative than before, and with new technology, efforts are made to reduce their effect on the ears. But even today, headphones damage the ears just as much as other loud sounds. The result can be called “noise-induced hearing loss”.

The tiny hair cells in the inner ear that act as hearing receptors can bend over time when headphones are exposed to loud sounds. On the other hand, if they are given enough time after listening to a loud sound, then these hair cells can recover from the back, if not, then they may have to face permanent damage. Keeping this in mind, today we have brought you information about the harm caused by excessive use of headphones.

Health Shots talked about this topic with Dr. By Smit Nagaonkar, Coordinator, ENT Consultant Department, Sir NH Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai. He gave some important information in this regard. So, let’s find out about some of the negative effects of headphones on the ears (Adverse effects of headphones) and how they can be avoided.

It is not necessary that the loud sound of the headphones will cause harm

People usually say that keeping the volume on the headphones does not harm the ears. But that’s not the case at all. There have been a few cases where using headphones even at low volume can affect hearing over time. This is because the damage to the ears is not only limited to the intensity of the noise, but also to the length of exposure. Prolonged attendance at an outdoor concert can do more damage than a shot or explosion close to the ear. So the duration of the exposure is as important as the volume.

Know what the research says

Various studies have revealed that more than a million young people are at risk of hearing loss due to excessive use of audio devices such as headphones and earphones. Unfortunately, hearing loss caused by exposure to very loud noise cannot be reversed. So be careful.

  • These symptoms can be observed with prolonged use of headphones
  • Ringing, roaring, hissing and buzzing sounds in the ears.
  • Can’t be heard clearly in noisy places.
  • Muffled sounds and the feeling that your ear is blocked.
  • Watching TV louder than before.

Follow the 60%/60 minutes concept

A hearing test and medical examination is the only way to correct hearing loss. If you limit the use of headphones and ear birds, the effect of this damage can be reduced. Doctors recommend adopting the 60%/60 minutes concept. Do not play music, games and movies at a volume higher than 60% of the maximum volume. At the same time, spend a maximum of 60 minutes a day with headphones in your ears. Listening to music at a higher volume than this and keeping headphones on for more than 60 minutes can be very harmful to you.

Sometimes situations arise where it becomes imperative for you to wear headphones and earphones. In such a situation, with these tips recommended by your doctor, you can reduce the resulting damage.
