Broccoli was brought to America by immigrants from Italy. By the 1920s, it was eaten as a popular vegetable in America. Today, broccoli is enjoyed throughout Europe. Broccoli is a “cool season” crop and hot weather is not suitable for this plant. Broccoli grows best in temperatures between 18 °C and 23 °C.

Broccoli is a storehouse of nutrients

According to the journal published in Research Gate, broccoli is also rich in folates, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamins K and E.

It is also a good source of minerals such as calcium, manganese, iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc and phosphorus. In addition to this, this vegetable is also a good source of electrolytes.

Broccoli also contains more protein than many vegetables. Broccoli can be eaten both raw and cooked, but eating it lightly steamed is very beneficial.

Broccoli prevents cancer

According to the journal published in Research Gate, broccoli contains an element called “glucoraphanin”, which can help the cancer-preventing element “sulforaphane”, if the vegetable is cooked, the benefits of broccoli are greatly reduced. Broccoli is also a good source of “indole-3-carbinol”, which improves DNA repair in cells and inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Eating more broccoli may be linked to reducing the risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

Broccoli contains “indole-3-carbinol,” which may protect against breast cancer by replacing cancer-promoting estrogen. Sprouts also contain the phytochemical sulforaphane, a product of glucoraphanin—which is thought to help prevent certain types of cancer, such as colon and rectal cancer.

Just 3 servings of raw broccoli per month can reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 40%. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that “broccoli is one of the foods that can prevent colon cancer.”

Controls blood sugar and weight

Broccoli is considered a low-glycemic food that helps normalize blood sugar. It helps reduce weight by controlling insulin. It also boosts enzymes that help detoxify the body. Detoxification leads to weight loss and helps prevent certain diseases.

4 Steaming is the healthiest way

Broccoli should not be included in the diet by overcooking or boiling, as this destroys its nutrients. Broccoli should be eaten by steaming or lightly frying so that its nutrients remain intact.
