We spoke to Neha Pathania, Chief Dietitian, Paras Hospital, Gurugram to know about some of the most popular DIY hacks and their skin risks. Neha explains, “The most popular DIY skin hacks these days are baking soda, garlic, toothpaste, vitamin E and lemon juice. Therefore, it is important to know about them in detail.

What do the experts think about these DIY hacks?

Chief nutritionist Neha Pathania says, “Using things like toothpaste, baking soda and garlic as home remedies can also harm your skin. The alkaline properties contained in it can cause many skin problems.

These hacks can cause your skin to dry out by absorbing the natural oils that come out of it. Which can cause itchy skin. Dry skin also causes premature aging.

Know the dangers of these most popular DIY skin hacks

1. Baking soda

As a solution to many skin problems, we use baking soda as a home remedy. It is very beneficial for the skin. But overuse of anything causes harm.

About the use of baking soda, Dr Pathania says, “Baking soda adversely affects the pH balance of the skin. Naturally, the skin’s pH value ranges from 4.5 to 5.5. While the pH level of baking soda is 9 which is alkaline. Its alkaline effect removes its natural protection against natural damage.

She adds, “Baking soda has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in the production of personal care products, oral care products and over-the-counter medicines. Hackers on social media promote the abuse of baking soda among people. which are very harmful. So it’s important to keep this in mind.”

2. Toothpaste

According to Dr. Gently using toothpaste on the skin can cause skin cracks, sensitivity, itching and dryness. The process by which the toothpaste is made is not suitable for the skin. By using toothpaste, the pH balance of your skin becomes unbalanced, due to which problems like acne and skin peeling appear.

3. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is very beneficial for the skin. But its excessive use can cause skin problems like itching and irritation. Many people have to face rashes and inflammation due to its use. Excessive use of vitamin E on the face triggers many types of allergic reactions.

4. Garlic

Applying raw garlic directly to the face can cause skin damage and irritation. On the other hand, not everyone has the same skin. Therefore, in some people it can cause problems such as skin allergies, eczema, skin inflammations and blisters.

5. Lemon juice

Lemon juice contains citric acid. It is very acidic, which can cause dark spots on your skin when exposed to sunlight. It makes the skin dry and lifeless. Along with this, it causes skin irritation.
