Common myths about shampoo

Popular dermatologist Dr Jayshree Sharad shared some common myths about shampoos through her recent Instagram post.

1. Myth: Changing shampoo will stop hair loss

Fact: Shampoo’s job is to clean the scalp and hair. It depends on the season whether your scalp is dry or oily. You should change your shampoo depending on the season.

Change shampoo and conditioner when your hair suggests it. Always review the product based on your experience. Consider buying two or three different shampoos and conditioners, then choose which shampoo to use based on how your hair feels. However, changing the shampoo will not stop the hair fall.

2. Myth: Regular shampooing leads to hair loss.

Fact: If your scalp is exposed to pollution, dirt or sweat, you should shampoo your hair every day to keep it clean.

People with very fine hair who exercise frequently (and sweat a lot) and people who live in humid climates should wash their hair frequently.

3. Myth: Sulfate shampoos are bad for hair.

Fact: Sulfate is a cleanser that helps remove oil and dirt from the scalp. Shampoo should be chosen based on your hair type. Some hair types are suitable for sulfate in shampoo and some are not suitable for sulfate in shampoo.

Sulfate is a great cleanser, but overuse can leave hair dry and lifeless. As a result of these chemicals, it strips the natural oils from the scalp and hair. If you have a sensitive scalp, it can aggravate some of these conditions and worsen the condition of your hair. Therefore, consult your dermatologist before use.

4. Myth: Shampoo should be applied to the hair

Fact: Shampoo should be applied to the scalp. The purpose of shampoo is to remove dirt, grime, sweat salts, grease and dead skin from the scalp.

Since the roots are often the oiliest, the scalp needs the most care when shampooing. Due to their relative aging and dryness, shampoo tends to dry out the ends of the hair more.

Now you know the right way to shampoo your hair

Using your fingers and palms, gently rub your hair from root to tip. Do not use your fingernails to scrub your scalp, as this can cause sores that itch and develop into ulcers. Apply the conditioner only to the ends of the hair. Your scalp doesn’t require a lot of moisturizers.
