With age, changes occur in all organs of the body as well as in the brain. Dementia is one of them. Because of this, a person’s ability to think, understand and work is affected. The resulting memory loss seriously affects a person’s daily life. Although memory loss is not a specific disease, it and many other diseases can lead to dementia. Research conducted at an American university suggests that when cerebrospinal fluid leaks around the brain in dementia patients are detected, brain relaxation, the causes of dementia, can be reduced.
What is this new dementia research?
Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, USA, conducted an in-depth study on a patient with behavioral frontotemporal dementia. He said that until now the condition was considered incurable. This affects the patients’ behavior and ability to function in everyday life. Many patients develop severe cognitive, behavioral and personality changes (causes of dementia). Because of this, he also has to be admitted to the hospital. This research was published in the journal Alzheimer’s and Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions. Research results may suggest a cure for dementia. If fluid leaks are detected, patients can be cured.
What is cerebrospinal fluid?
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain and spinal cord to protect them from injury. When this fluid begins to leak, the brain can relax. This can cause symptoms of dementia. According to the researcher, brain relaxation can be detected by MRI.
It is necessary to detect a headache or a serious brain disease (Brain Tumor).
It is also important to know about the patient’s history of severe headache. If the patient feels better when lying down or continues to sleep despite having enough sleep, these may be signs of dementia. The patient was previously diagnosed with specific encephalopathy. A condition in which brain tissue protrudes into the spinal cord.
Even when brain swelling is detected, it can be difficult to locate the source of the CSF leak later. When fluid leaks through a tear or cyst into the surrounding membrane, it becomes visible only with the help of a CT myelogram.
Symptoms of brain relaxation can be completely eliminated
A venous fistula can also be the reason for a CSF leak. In these cases, the fluid leaks into the vein. It is difficult to see on a routine CT myelogram. A special CT scan is used to locate these leaks.
In this study, researchers used this imaging technique on 21 patients with brain damage and symptoms of dementia. They found venous fistulas in nine of those patients. In all nine patients, the fistulas were closed surgically. Symptoms of brain dysfunction or brain relaxation have completely disappeared.
In the end
The remaining 12 participants, whose leakage could not be identified, were treated with conventional treatments. Of these, only three patients experienced relief from their symptoms.
However, this specialized image is not widely available. Therefore, this study indicates the need for additional research to improve symptom recognition and cure rates.
